Ethical fashion is not just for skinny people
It bothers me that most fast fashion brands cater to skinny, at best average-sized women. It is as if curvier women don’t have the means or inclination to shop fast fashion, which is entirely untrue. I have at least three female friends who are stylish women that can both afford and really rock stylish plus-sized clothes.
However, my plus-sized friends also have the same problem I do, that of finding ethical clothing that is stylish and affordable. They are no less ethical than those of us who are of a smaller dress size and deserve to feel good about the brands they support. I strongly believe that it’s time fashion retailers realised this (yes, even the slow fashion ones) and cater to this crowd of sustainable fashionistas.
That said, there is a growing number of ethical fashion retailers that focus on the plus-sized group, and kudos to them for their efforts in promoting plus-sized ethical fashion. Here are three that I discovered online. And the best part is, they ship internationally!
1. Beth Ditto

The American singer-songwriter, who is known for being in the indie rock band Gossip, launched her own plus-size clothing line earlier this year. Her clothing line is full of quirky and classy pieces that flatter the female form. Prices range from US$100 to US$200 per item, but you’ll find the occasional dress or skirt priced under US$100. Definitely worth the money spent, since these clothes are made to last.
2. On The Plus Side

Founded in 1984 in the US, On The Plus Side (formerly Making It Big) offers classy fashion staples for the plus-size fashionista. On their website, they claim to be committed to the environment and ethics…so who am I to doubt such an established brand? They even have a special page for clothes under US$79, which is great value for money, considering the classic, yet trendy designs involved.
3. Eileen Fisher
A more premium brand compared to Beth Ditto and On The Plus Side, Eileen Fisher offers quality wardrobe staples that will never go out of style. The label may lack the trendier items, however it makes up for that by using quality fabric and structured styles.
